Empathy and the Art of Listening with Rachel Turiel

Oct 21 | 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

Part 2 of the Dolores Public Library’s Mental Health Awareness Fall Speaker series. Call 970-882-4127 to register. October 21st from 5:30 – 7pm.
When we and others are in emotional pain we tend to pull out unhelpful cultural slogans like “don’t sweat the small stuff,” or, perhaps we offer advice, reassurance, and analysis. Yet, this often leaves us feeling more alone. What can be more soothing, settling and clarifying is tuning into what is at the heart of someone’s expression, even if it comes across as complaint or self-pity. Join us to learn how to acknowledge and empathize with our own and others’ emotional upset in a way that brings relief and togetherness.
Rachel Turiel is a student and teacher of Nonviolent Communication. She works with businesses, schools, organizations, parents, couples and individuals. She was recipient of the Durango Women’s Resource Center’s 2018 award: champion of Peace and Nonviolence. She is also a writer and has been published in the New York Times, High Country News, and more. She is raising two teenagers, both of whom provide her with great opportunities to practice listening.
