Author Talk: Susan Noble
Oct 1 | 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
During the fifteen years author Susan Noble has lived in Montezuma County, she has been a teacher, tutor, and horseback riding instructor. While coaching a 12-year-old boy on his horse several years ago, she asked him what books he was reading. When he answered, “Nothing,” she was shocked, since the young man had been a voracious reader throughout Elementary School. She asked why he had quit. “Have you looked at the books they’re aiming at Middle School kids lately?” he asked. “They’re about vampires, sci-fi, fantasy, and depressing stuff – and I’m not interested. Who’s writing for ranch kids?”
Heartbroken that he felt excluded from reading, she started thinking that, having written for national horse magazines, she could probably write a book. So she got busy.
Her debut novel, Cowgirls Don’t Quit, was published in March of 2020 and is dedicated to that young man. The sequel, The Free Horse, came out six months later and was dedicated to another riding student for her successful effort to rehabilitate a spoiled horse. The books were selected by Colorado Country Life magazine as a Top Pick for young readers in their November 2020 issue. In March of 2021, a NY Times best-selling author called the books “the perfect read for horse lovers of all ages.”
Noble said it has been gratifying to hear from fans all over the country about how much they love her stories and that they are hoping for more. As a result, she continues to “write for ranch kids” from her home in Lewis.
